ELIMITE
CREAM Effective Scabies Treatment Option

Manufactured by Allergan, Elimite (Permethrin) 5% cream is a topical
scabicidal agent which is commonly used for the treatment of Sarcoptes
scabiei infestation (otherwise known as Scabies). Permethrin itself
is also actively used against a broad range of pests including ticks,
fleas, lice, mites, and other arthropods and also goes by the brand
name 'Nix'. Elimite is for topical use only.
HOW ELIMITE SHOULD BE TAKEN Usually, one
application will completely eliminate the parasites. However, the
treatment may need to be repeated after a week; let a doctor know
if signs of infestation reappear. Follow the directions on the package
or on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist
to explain any aspect that you do not understand. This prescription
drug should be used exactly as directed (not more or less of than
indicated) and it should not be used more often than directed.
ELIMITE DOSAGE & APPLICATION Thoroughly
massage the Elimite cream into the skin from the head to the soles
of the feet. While scabies rarely infests the scalp of adults, the
hairline, neck, temple, and forehead may be infested in infants and
geriatric patients. Usually 30 grams is sufficient for an average
adult. After 8 to 14 hours, it should be removed in the shower or
bath. Infants should be treated on the scalp, temple and forehead.
One application is typically effective and curative.
POSSIBLE ELIMITE SIDE EFFECTS Scabies infestation
is often times accompanied by pruritus, edema and erythema. Treatment
with Elimite may temporarily exacerbate these conditions. Patients
using Elimite to treat scabies are also advised that itching, mild
burning and/or stinging may occur after application of the Elimite
Cream. The intensity of these side effects may also be directly associated
with the severity of actual infestation. If these or any other side
effects occur, be sure to let a doctor know, especially if any seem
particularly troubling or persistent. |
